The flight price gets your attention. Accommodation, activities and the small daily choices decide what your holiday actually costs.

There is a particular kind of travel maths that happens when you really want to go somewhere. You find a cheap flight, remember that local meals can be inexpensive, and mentally declare the holiday affordable. Then come the airport transfers, the room you actually want, the cruise your friends send you and the checked bag. A useful Vietnam budget makes space for the trip you intend to take.

For a ten-day holiday from Australia, work with one person’s full spending in AUD, keep local price references in VND, and check exactly how many nights your flights create. Ten days does not automatically mean nine hotel nights when overnight flights and early arrivals are involved.

Use airfare examples carefully

On 6 October 2026, Vietnam Airlines’ Australia page displayed a Sydney–Hanoi return economy fare from AUD975 for 26 October–5 November 2026. The airline describes displayed fares as recently collected and subject to availability, with optional extras potentially additional. This is a dated example for those dates, not a general ten-day fare. [1]

Search your own dates before choosing the spending envelope. Compare arrival and departure times as well as price. An awkward arrival might lead you to book an extra room night; a different airport could add a substantial transfer. Save the fare details alongside the total so you can check what changed when you return to book.

What do local prices tell you?

Vietnam Tourism’s published price guide gives indicative examples of VND45,000 for a street-food meal with iced tea, VND300,000 for a budget-hostel night and VND700,000 for a mid-range hotel night. These are general guide figures, without a visible recent price-survey date, so use them as context and obtain current accommodation quotes. [2]

A room price also needs a unit. Is it per room or per person? Does it include breakfast and taxes? Can you share it, or are you paying the whole amount alone? The answers matter more than whether the hotel calls itself budget or boutique. Keep a separate note of the things that would make a cheap room unsuitable for you.

A worked ten-day budget in AUD

The following is an author-created planning example for one traveller, ten days and nine nights. It assumes a fairly compact route, modest accommodation, mostly local meals and selected paid activities. Every number is a budgeting assumption rather than a researched market average or available package price.

Per-person planning example. Shopping, alcohol and premium overnight cruises are outside this model; add them if wanted. Insurance, transport and other allowances may need to rise.

The official single-entry e-visa fee is USD25 for travellers who need and qualify for that visa. The AUD50 line is a planning allowance, not an exchange-rate calculation or a promise about total processing costs. Use the relevant official requirement for your passport and the actual payment amount. [3]

Now stress-test the model. A flight costing AUD500 more raises the total to AUD2,955. Increasing the accommodation allowance by AUD25 per night adds AUD225 over nine nights. These are easy changes to see before booking and frustrating changes to discover after committing to everything else.

The extras worth opening another tab for

Baggage deserves a check for every flight, including any domestic leg. Jetstar’s baggage page labels its published carry-on rules as applying to flights before 2 February 2027 or to Jetstar Japan. Check the rules for your operating airline and departure date when comparing fares. [4]

Activities are another common source of budget drift. Decide which one or two experiences are central to your trip and price those first. A substantial overnight cruise should have its own line, with meals and accommodation counted once. Do the same for an internal flight: include transfers and any bag charge, then remove the transport it replaces.

Leave a modest amount for spontaneous choices. A second coffee, a shared taxi after a long day or a restaurant someone recommends can be part of an enjoyable holiday. A budget with no room for those decisions can feel restrictive even if it is technically possible.

If you book a group trip, rebuild the calculation

For an organised Vietnam tour, start with the package price and add flights, extra nights, excluded meals, optional activities, insurance and any room supplement you want. Read the actual inclusions before adding the independent-travel lines above. Otherwise you could count the same hotel, domestic flight or excursion twice.

For a shared room, agree with your travel companion how you will split the payment and what happens if one person cancels. For a solo booking, check the room arrangement before assuming the advertised per-person price buys a private room. A clear answer now makes the accommodation comparison much more useful.

Keep a note beside every allowance: confirmed quote, published guide figure or your own estimate. Replace estimates as bookings become concrete. Once the complete total fits the money you can comfortably spend, you can choose the experiences that matter without negotiating with your calculator at every stop.
