A journey home could include a few days in Vietnam. Whether it is a clever detour depends on the complete price, the ticket conditions and what you want from those extra days.

You open a flight tab to organise a trip home. Somewhere between comparing departure times and calculating baggage, another idea appears: what if the journey included a few days somewhere you actually wanted to explore? A bowl of noodles, a different skyline, an evening with no family timetable yet. Vietnam can be part of that conversation. The useful question is how much the extra experience would cost you.

A stopover can be worthwhile even when it makes the journey more expensive. It can also erase an apparent airfare saving surprisingly quickly. Work out which version you are booking before the excitement makes the decision for you.

There is a real transit-tour option to investigate

Vietnam Airlines publishes a transit-tour programme covering some Australia-issued tickets travelling through Vietnam to or from India. Eligibility depends on route, booking class and ticket conditions, and the relevant flights must be operated by Vietnam Airlines on qualifying tickets. Its current page gives minimum city-tour connection times of eight hours in Hanoi and six in Ho Chi Minh City. Approval and immigration requirements still apply. [1]

That gives you a useful question to ask the airline before purchase: does this exact ticket qualify, and what would the confirmed service include? A long connection by itself tells you very little. Ask about the application deadline, airport collection, return arrangements and any charges you would pay yourself.

A transit tour also serves a different purpose from a three-night holiday. If your goal is a proper break, search a multi-city itinerary with an intentional gap between flights. Then check whether the fare permits that stop and whether every flight you need is actually included.

Calculate the extra holiday, line by line

Start with the price of the journey you would otherwise book. Keep the same origin, Indian destination, travel period, baggage needs and cabin when comparing. A cheaper route into another city may create a domestic flight or hotel bill later. Put those costs into the calculation too.

Here is a deliberately fictional example in Australian dollars. These are arithmetic scenarios, not airline quotes. The AUD450 stopover allowance represents accommodation, food, local travel, activities, entry costs, extra insurance costs and a buffer; your actual quotes may be higher or lower.

Stopover A leaves room for a short holiday within the assumed original budget. Stopover B asks you to pay AUD250 for the extra experience. Neither result tells you what you should choose. It tells you what the choice actually is. If your leave is tight or the money is needed elsewhere, the direct journey may fit better.

Keep currencies visible. Vietnam’s official e-visa portal lists USD25 for single entry and USD50 for multiple entry. Eligibility depends on your passport and circumstances; living in Australia does not itself establish an exemption. Use the applicable fee and your payment provider’s conversion in the final budget. Choose a stopover you can enjoy at its actual length

For a short stay, give one base most of your attention. Vietnam Tourism’s Hanoi weekend guide includes the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, illustrating how a city-focused visit can fill a break without another internal flight. [3] Build your own version around two or three things you care about: a food experience, a neighbourhood walk, perhaps a museum or a small-group activity.

Resist treating three nights as permission to fit in every place you have saved. Arrival and departure consume time even when the flights look convenient. A hotel change creates another packing session, transfer and check-in. Leaving a morning open can make the short stay feel more generous than adding one more destination.

If you are travelling alone, arrange one shared activity early in the visit. It gives the day a social starting point while keeping the rest flexible. Check its meeting point and finish time against your accommodation and airport plans, especially on the final day.

Ask the boring questions while they are still easy to solve

Before paying, confirm where you collect baggage, whether it is checked through, and how a missed connection would be handled under the tickets you are buying. If separate bookings are involved, ask each airline what it will and will not provide. Do the same for visa dates, cancellation terms and the coverage of your travel insurance. Written answers are easier to use than assumptions made from a search result.

Finally, compare the journey in hours as well as dollars. Would you arrive in India rested enough for the reason you are going? Are those extra days approved leave? Does the stopover take time from something you value more?

Start with two complete quotes and one short Vietnam plan. If the figures work and the extra days sound exciting, the stopover has earned its place in your journey. That is a much stronger reason to book than a headline suggesting a holiday will pay for itself.
